自暴自棄の・絶望した．命知らずの，死に物狂いの．
病気や事態が絶望的・よくなる見込みがない．
Desperate disease must have desperate remedies.
絶体絶命の病には粗治療が必要（ことわざ）．
状況が悪い・難しい・深刻な・危険な局面になっていることを意味する単語なんだけど， 転じて I'm desparate for something とか I'm desparate to do のような表現で「熱望する」「渇望する」という意味に使われる． この用法はかなりよく使われていて Web などではよく目にする． また，desparatelyは「心底…したい」というようなときに使われている．
